I didn't expect to get so much out of volunteering, it was purely to give my time and service. It is enriching and uplifting to know you are part of something which makes a difference. I highly recommend it.

I have agreed to start volunteering for Adult Literacy and Teaching English as a Second Language. I think everyone should have a chance to learn and improve themselves. If I can assist with my experience, I definitely know that it is going to be very rewarding.

I ran the Flora London Marathon this year for Age Concern and was delighted that my big day out in turn helped others in some small way. Since then, I've done voluntary work with the elderly and it's the most rewarding thing I've done. Oftentimes they're just happy to have someone to talk to and I'm grateful that I'm able to do that.

Not sure about the point of this note other than to say - just do it! It's fab!

What is the aim of this exercise?
Are the details passed to charities to follow up?
If so, are voters informed of this?

The only purpose is to provoke a little thought. There is no ulterior motive at all! We have no way of knowing who voted or what they voted for and even if we did we never pass on any details about our users to anyone, ever.

As Harriet says below, voluntary organisations need all the help they can get, and as Fiona commented about volunteering in this week's Five Tips: "You would acquire new skills, apply them and meet interesting new people."

I hope this puts your mind at rest.

As somebody who works for a charity I would just like to say to all those who think they might want to volunteer DO IT! Volunteers are so thin on the ground that for 1 or 2 hours a week you can make a huge difference!
