Darren's Story

Hi Fiona,

I read a review in the Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper six months ago and eventually got a copy of your book, Be Your Own Life Coach. I've just finished reading your book and think it is one of the greatest books I've read. I recently quit my unhappy job, travelled to the UK and Denmark and am now back home in Melbourne, Australia (To the comfort zone).

After finding employment again as a Contractor in the IT industry, I recently had my contract terminated after only a few weeks due to a work colleague becoming upset with me. The disappointing thing for me, was that no-one talked to me. I learned of my termination by way of a message on my answering machine after work. His manager contacted my agency and the agency left the message.

I was shocked and hurt. But two days later, I had overcome the pain. I am not bitter, I just think that this work colleague had an opportunity to learn about life and took the easy option of getting rid of me.

My lesson here and achievement is to not take this personally, and let it cripple me, as a previous experience did for over six months. I admit to procrastinating about getting another job (it's been one week), but I have updated my CV, and have looked at jobs on the Internet. I will respond to those jobs today or tomorrow, and get back on with it. The only hesitation I have, is that working with computers and the type of people I seem to work with causes me unhappiness. I wonder whether I should change career to something that is better suited to my personality. I have considered other careers, but don't have anything in mind. I love singing and playing guitar, and have had lessons for the last year to improve both. With more time and effort I could do more with this and even get work.

But, this is my responsibility and challenge for making these things happen in my life, the real purpose of this email was to say thank you for sharing your life's wisdom.

Yours sincerely,
