Becoming a Life Coach
We do not provide training to become a Life Coach nor do we endorse any providers of Life Coach training.
The information below is provided simply to assist those considering life coaching as a career. It should not be construed as a recommendation, an endorsement or an indication of the value of any company or organisation mentioned.
At present there is no official governing body to regulate coach training in the UK. However, you will find courses accredited by the Oxfordshire Open College Network (ONC) or the International Coach Federation (ICF).
The ONC is a body recognised by the Department for Education and Skills. It provides a quality assurance and validation service for providers of learning and training in the UK.
Some courses in the UK are also gaining recognition by Universities. As interest in coach training increases the number of training opportunities based in the UK will also increase.

Listed below is a sample of the different types of coach training available. Some involve a short weekend residential followed by mentoring and training and some are longer virtual training based. This list is here to give you an idea of what is available, you are advised to contact the schools and colleges for further details.

The Coaching Academy
The Coaching Academy was the first UK based coach training school and has trained more coaches than anyone else in Europe. It is a mix of live tuition and a supported, structured programme that can be done in your own time. Achievement Specialists
Founded in 1997, by international speaker, trainer and author Curly Martin, the Life Coaching Handbook Diploma is based on her book “The Life Coaching handbook”. The course consists of
pre-course book, 2 day accelerated workshop, distant learning material and support coaching sessions. A Master Practitioner Certificate is also available. ONC accredited.

Coach U trains coaches in 40 Countries. The coach training program is based in America but students from all over the world participate by telephone. Training takes approximately 2
years via teleclasses, self study workbooks, tests and mentor coaching and can be carried out at your own pace. ICF accredited.

The Oxford School of Coaching and Mentoring
Established in 1988, this is a virtual organisation which delivers programs to individuals and organisations either face to face or via e-mail. The duration of coach training depends
on the level of the qualification (diploma or certificate). These are recognised by Oxford Brookes University as being eligible for part exemption from modules on their Masters Degree in coaching and
mentoring.

Industrial Society School of Coaching
Established in 1996 by Myles Downey, the School of Coaching provides short courses to develop the coaching skills of senior managers, executives and team leaders. It also offers a
course suitable for people working in change management within organisations and is based on formal teaching and coaching practice and is accredited by the University of Strathclyde.
