Dig Deep for The Truth

Tuesday, March 15 2005

I hope this finds you well. The great news, certainly for us in the UK, is that Spring is here. The worst is over, the mornings are sunnier and the days longer and milder. Hooray! The change of season often provokes a change in outlook for us too. Thoughts of new possibilities and fresh opportunities may begin to stir as we emerge from months of short, cold, dark days.

yeahExciting dreams and big ambitions make for an exciting life and I spend a great deal of my time encouraging them in others - and myself, of course.

Twenty years of working with people in this close-up way have given me privileged access to the thinking behind people's success - and failure. I've worked with sensationally successful individuals and individuals who find life more of a struggle. Here's my observation:

Those individuals who find life easier, more hospitable and generally more welcoming to their plans and schemes, expect life to be that way. It’s intrinsically, innately, the way they think about life. They have an unspoken, usually unconscious trust in life to support them.

I am often the first person to make them aware of this, though they may have been called "lucky" or "charmed" by others and not given it any thought. Examples of these people are all around us. Former Daily Mirror editor, Piers Morgan, whose memoirs, The Insider, came out last week, is one such individual. At 28 he was the editor of the biggest selling newspaper in the world, The News of The World, moved on to the Mirror, and was sacked in disgrace last year for the fake Iraqi prisoner torture photos. Escorted from the building by security, condemned the world over, he looked finished and he wasn’t even 40.

I knew this chap would bounce back with an even more interesting career shift, probably in television, and sure enough he has his own political interview show on a Saturday evening and was reputably paid £1.2 million for his book. It doesn’t matter what you think of Piers or his politics. What matters is that you understand his thinking, an others like him, which makes life much easier for him than many others.

Others who find life less accommodating, less fulfilling, more frustrating and disappointing, think differently. They may get excited about their plans and ambitions, and take plenty of action too. But they sabotage their endeavours, slow down their progress by an underlying lack of genuine conviction in a successful outcome. Miracles are not on these people’s agenda, nor do they tend to show up in their lives.

It’s what you believe, deep down, that shapes your life. It’s those hard core, underlying beliefs, that position you on the course you take through life.

I’m going to talk about all of this in depth at my talk in London next Monday evening, 21st March - click here for more info. Do come with pen and paper so I can work with you on this crucial stuff. My new book, Indestructible Self-belief, is also in the shops from this Friday, but you can get it from us now! You’ll find Chapter One further down in this week’s Newsletter.

Right now, let me show you how to "process" your thinking so you are always in possession of the facts. It’s vital to know what you’re really thinking, especially when you’re thinking big. Get into the habit of using this technique regularly. It’s remarkably simple, but that’s the best way to get to the truth.
