Be Inspired
Sunday, October 17 2004Our theme this week, Be Inspired, was itself inspired by the magnificent individuals who took part in the recent Paralympics in Athens. I felt particularly moved by the Bosnian Volleyball team, most of whose disabilities were the result of the Bosnian conflict. There was something particularly poignant about these young men, who had been able-bodied until a few years and were now living with a severe disability.
They had been horrifically injured, lost limbs, been maimed or paralysed from landmines or bullets, yet were pushing themselves to their limits and beyond to achieve something important.
All Olympic athletes are inspiring, but these people are in another league altogether. Their spirit, courage and never-give-up attitude, in spite of their physical challenges, is humbling and an incredible example to every one of us, whatever our personal challenges. As for getting out there and getting fit, don’t even think of an excuse!
Sue Smith, a wonderfully inspiring coach herself and one of my team here, felt similarly moved and spent the entire weekend glued to the television. She has come up with a Five Step Plan to Inspire You as a tribute to these fabulous people.
