Finding a passion
Answer by Mike Blissett
Fiona asks:
All my life I have "picked up" and "dropped" ideas..gone on courses, read books, got motivated then lost the impetus.I am interested in so many things but am a real Jack of all Trades...etc etc! I know I lack clarity and concentration. Now nearly 50 I know that time for action is running out. I am healthy, intelligent and energetic and I want to make a success of my life.
How on earth do I find out what my passion is?? Surely I should know by now!!
Mike says:
Hi Fiona,
Absolutely, you know! As a coach I believe we all know what we truly want to be and do with our lives. Sometimes it takes a little hunting around for, but it's there.
Ask yourself the question 'what would I do if I knew I couldn't fail?'
Spend time with this and dream away. Write down what you come up with (and always record your thoughts from this moment on, they're important). What fires you up, gets you going, makes you go weak at the knees just thinking about it? For me it's being self employed, coaching, writing on my laptop by a pool in The Bahamas (which I did just before Christmas, and I recommend it). What is it for you? Almost 50? It just means you're a babe. Don't play that age card. Take hold of life and live it with all the energy you have, and then some.
You say you've read all the books, blah blah blah - so get yourself a personal coach! If you want a push, a professional point of view to get focused, make your move and get moving. At the end of the day there is nothing to replace simply taking action.
My advice? Simply do it. Make good things happen, make mistakes, make your life fun, whatever - but DO IT!!
Have a look at the action plan suggested in my reply to Jade and see what your 'magnificent obsession' is.
Wishing you success.
