Long term motivation

Answer by Mike Blissett

Jade asks:

I've been reading a lot about setting myself goals - I think I can get motivated but what helps people stay motivated? Long term goals seem so far away or even impossible at times I'm worried I'll get "stuck" or give up.

Mike says:

Hi Jade,

I know where you're coming from. For years I knew where I wanted to go, but just the thought of it being so far away eroded my motivation. Then I learned another approach, called the 'Magnificent Obsession' by Tony Robbins, 'Beginning With The End In Mind' by Stephen Covey (and a myriad of other titles by other motivators), but the crux of the technique is this; if you make your destination real, huge, and fabulous enough and then chunk back from it until you arrive at today then you'll have created a neural pathway so your brain can say "sure, now I see that it's possible".

Ask yourself where you're heading? Is the dream big enough? If not, make it bigger; dream it some more, make it more colourful, more fabulous. Add sounds and people and feelings and sunshine (you get the idea).

Write it down, and again add to it. Read it every day. Make it real, as if it's already happened in your mind. Run the mental movie many times EVERY DAY.

Then chunk back; what do you need to do by the end of this year to still be on course, then by the end of 6 months, 1 month, 1 week, and finally today? Keep the dream alive, make it real, and then take the actions, daily, that will get you there.

Stay on course, stay motivated, and make your dreams a reality!
