How can I move forward - yet keep what I've got?
Answer by Mike Blissett
Jan asks:
I have been divorced since my children were young. I have gone from rented housing on benefits to owning my own home and no benefits, which I am very proud of.Now my children are older I am getting the chance to consider what I would like to do with life.
I would like to become a life coach and am doing a dipolma, NLP etc. My problem is that my job takes up lots of my time and l need to earn the money to pay the bills.
The only option I can think of is selling my house and going back into rented accomodation, so I can give up my job and focus on my new career.
Am I right to think this is the only option?
Mike says:
Congratulations for such a proactive approach to life! I'm sure you're getting loads of insight out of studying life coaching & NLP.
You didn't say whether your children are old enough to contribute financially to the household, as of course this would make a big difference and relieve some of the pressure on you.
Another option, and one favoured by most practitioners still in training is the multiple income approach; in that you start to take on a few coaching/NLP clients outside of your usual working hours.
Remember, people want coaching at all times, during the week 9-5, evening, weekends, even Sunday mornings!
A commonly held belief is that we must be fully trained and experienced before taking our first steps to create a business - but this is usually based on fear of the unknown, or fear of failure.
Putting off whatever it is until we feel more experienced seldom works - experience comes from, guess what - getting experience!
Ask yourself what you could do right now.
Remember, successful businesses take time to build, so employing a gradual but pro-active approach can be best, both with establishing a new venture & earning extra money along the way.
Do you really want to sell your house and move back to renting?
Thought not!
You sound so proud to have achieved it, and well you should be. As a coach I would ask what other suggestions you could come up with whilst putting possible house selling ideas right at the bottom of your list.
I've given you a few suggestions, now what else could you conjure up?
Please get back to me and tell me what you decide, how you're getting on, and where your business moves in the future.
Lastly, it's never too early to begin a business plan. The long and short of it is that with one we have direction, yet without one, we just flail around in the dark.
Visualise your success, write it down - and make it BIG!
In the meantime I genuinely wish you every success and happiness in your future life.
A huge hug,
Mike
