To move or not for boyfriend's job?

Answer by Fiona Harrold

Marilyn asks:

My boyfriend has been offered a job hundreds of miles away from where we live now. It is a great opportunity for him, more money and better prospects.

He says it's a joint decision whether or not we move but I know he'd really like to take this chance. But I love my job here, am doing very well and likely to get a major promotion very soon. I am really unsure what to do.

Fiona says:

The simple answer is that if you have to ask me, then the answer is probably that you want to stay and you're trying to convince yourself otherwise. Why do you have to make a final decision now? Why not support him in making the move, see each other as often as you can and see how you both feel.

Out of interest, ask yourself how he would respond if it was the other way around and you were making a move for the sake of your career.
