Mastering a negative inner voice

Answer by Grainne O'Malley

Milli asks:

My inner voice always talks negatively.

When I'm out walking using 'me' time - my thoughts are negative. How can I make them positive? I have a happy life - but my self-esteem is average/low.

I need to master my inner voice - but how?

Grainne says:

You can do lots of things from affirmations to meditation to re-train your inner voice, (you could even try Fiona's "Falling in Love - with Yourself" CD, it's wonderful).

But here's my favourite of all for it's simplicity and sheer effectiveness.

Put an ordinary elastic band around your wrist and every time you catch yourself having a negative thought give it a big snap. If you fearlessly snap yourself hard every time, you will soon find that your mind is somewhat reluctant to wander into negativity.

Your wrist might hurt for a few weeks, but your life will reap the rewards for a lot, lot longer.
