Losing weight for my wedding!

Answer by Mike Blissett

Alice asks:

I am 7 stone overweight, and am very conscious about it. I know that I am the only one that can resolve the situation and I have made many attempts over the past two years to diet, without success. Because I have so much to lose it seems to be an overwhelming task.

I am due to get married at the end of this year, and I know that I will cancel the wedding if I don't achieve my goal.

I have a fantastic job, and appear confident at work, although in social situations my confidence is lacking. I think about my weight in every thing I do.

How can I stick to a diet and change my life?

Mike says:

Your honesty speaks to me like a breath of fresh air. I really appreciate that.

As humans we have two powerful motivators; pain or pleasure. If what we want is in neither category then we usually won't achieve it. It's also true to say we'll usually work harder to avoid pain.

So, what is your motivator? It would be a good idea to write your best case scenario, which I'm guessing would be the perfect wedding. Make it a story, several pages. Get colourful. Close your eyes and dream it, smell it, feel the silk between your fingers. The whole thing. And most importantly, begin doing this every day. Make it your dream, your goal, your obsession.

Now, pain. What would be the opposite? What would it cost you to not achieve this ideal weight? The wedding, job, health, happiness, friends? I don't know, but you do. Again, expand on the feeling, close your eyes and really go though the detail of how this would affect you.

Now do the positive scenario again. Daily; positive, negative, positive.

It's important to say don't half do this process. If you want to feel the joy, really feel it - cry with happiness. Equally, on the negatives, really feel the pain.

Crash diets don't usually work. They make us feel awful, starve us and fray our very nerves. Make an appointment to see a nutritionist. If your gonna eat healthily, then get a plan written by an expert. The flip side is fitness. Don't just join a gym, but get a trainer to help you with your program - it'll be hard work, but then you do have a date in your diary, don't you? Do all the classes offered. Have fun, make some new friends. Begin to live another, extra aspect to your lifestyle.

The main thing with weight loss is go for the long term. It doesn't happen overnight, but the results when they come will be with you for the rest of your life. Remember and keep practicing ALL these points.

Drop me an e-mail monthly and I'll congratulate or give you a kick! Come on, Alice, do it - you know it's absolutely possible. Get intelligent and take control of your life.

All the very best
