How can I change ME?

Answer by Mike Blissett

Antonia asks:

In the last couple of months, I have been asking myself some honest searching answers and finally come to the terms with the truth.

I've recognised and found it difficult to face the many flaws I have. My controlling behaviour, outwardly strong coping persona is putting me under very much strain. As a big sister of 5 siblings - I've always been bossy and sorted other peoples problems. Nobody realises (including my husband) that I have probs of my own.

I maintain the strong coping business like mother who is able to juggle everything front - but I'm not. Where do I begin?

Mike says:

Hi Antonia,

I was only talking with someone tonight about the many layers we build up with our personality over the years. We can be someone's mother, daughter, wife, friend, confidant, tower of strength, but who we really are can often become but a distant memory.  Consider the following questions;

  • Who am I when I'm feeling really happy?
  • Who am I when I'm feeling really sad?
  • How do I see me?
  • How do others see me?
  • Are there any differences between the two?

By becoming more in touch with who you truly are you will be giving yourself a chance to reconnect and be more honest with yourself. Put a plan of action into place, which could be self motivated, or invest in a book (Fiona's 'Be Your Own Life Coach' would be a great place to start), attend a workshop, buy a course ('Get Motivated' listed on this very site, for example), or ultimately commit to working with a coach.

Progressively, step by step you'll address, look at, and move forward with all the areas of your life.

Finally, I always say that we should be kinder to ourselves. Please read the support structure suggestions I've included in my answer to Janey - they are true for all of us; BE KIND TO YOURSELF.

All best wishes and happiness.
