Five Steps to prepare for a Great Career
1. Look at your manager
Could you step into your manager’s shoes tomorrow? Could you deputise for your manager at a big meeting? Study your manager and pick out the three to five things that make them stand out. Incorporate these into your work and life.
2. Look at the high achievers
I’m sure you want to be better than your manager. Look at the really high achievers at work. The ones who stand out and get all the promotions. The ones who are tipped for the top. What makes them stand out? What can you learn from them?
3. Look at Yourself
Spend some time and take a look at yourself. Do you look the part? Would you promote yourself? What changes could you make to yourself that would get you noticed and make you stand out above the rest.
4. Get organised
Clean your desk. Get a diary. Manage your time. Getting organised is a sure fire way to get noticed. The people who are in control of every working day do get noticed.
5. Have an opinion
As you progress in your career you will be expected to have opinions and ideas all the time. Do you? Try it this week at work. Challenge yourself to have an opinion on work related issues and share them with people. It doesn’t matter if people disagree – the fact that you have an opinion means you care and that’s what earns respect.
Good luck – you’ve begun the road to a brilliant career.
