Where You Are Now is the Perfect Place to Start
Some lively discussion resulted from last week’s newsletter! A number of you identified strongly with last week’s theme to "relaunch your life at any age," particularly our readers in the 50 age bracket.
Thanks to Ross, for instance, for this contribution:
I identify very much with the “I’m too old to make a big life change” clan, and that feeling that at 54½ I may be “running out of time” to make a career move. But I think the biggest factor that holds people like me back, apart from all the commitments (most of them financial, but some family, that we choose to make) is that we actually have, by your mid fifties, a lot to lose. So in a sense the risks are much greater, and there is the feeling that there is less time to make up for the inevitable mistakes and disasters that come with making big changes…So making that leap of faith takes a bit longer to psych yourself up for in your fifties.
Ross went on to say that she’s taking that leap of faith – well done Ross, and please do keep us posted on the results!
I thought it would be useful to continue the theme of "relaunch your life at any age" by asking this question: what’s holding you back?
My experience of working with my clients tells me this: whatever age we are, we feel that we’ve got so much to lose. A client in her 50’s may hold back from change because she is worried about losing what she’s built up.
A client in her 30’s may hold back due to worry that she hasn’t yet built up enough. What working with clients of all ages has taught me is this: whatever age we are, we will find reasons to hold back! And those reasons will feel huge and significant to us. What we need to focus ourselves on is strategies to get beyond them.
