Keeping Self-Belief Alive

tragicom"I believe in the sun even when it's not shining"
Anne Frank

It is par for the course that an actor will spend a percentage of his/her working life in between jobs or "resting."  Having been an actor for over 10 years, I have experienced the highs and lows of  "resting" first hand and it can be extremely challenging to your self-belief.

It is easy for any of us to feel confident and believe in ourselves when we are riding high doing what we love and receiving good reviews for our efforts.

But when the curtain falls for the final time, the void ahead can be quite frightening.  Virtually no other occupation serves up as much propensity for the demons of fear, insecurity, confusion and self-doubt than that of an actor.  I am well placed to talk about keeping self-belief alive in doubting times!

I have just finished a hugely successful run at the Tricycle Theatre in London in a play that received rave reviews, alongside some incredibly talented actors. Now, I find myself yet again facing a term of uncertainty.

But, one thing I have learnt is that I simply must remain motivated to keep the fires of self-belief burning when the fire has quite literally just gone out.  No matter what your circumstances, if your fire has gone out, I truly hope you find these tips as genuinely life-saving as I do.

Good luck!!
