Daily Mirror: What Shall I Do With My Career?
Daily Mirror, October 19th 2004
Overview
Melissa loves adventure in her life, but her last big adventure was 5 years ago when she went travelling on her own after University.
Since then, her career in the civil service has failed to ignite her passion. She has channelled a lot of her dissatisfaction into energetic hobbies such as running and fencing. Whilst being a great way to keep fit, these do not answer the big question facing her, "What shall I do with my Career?"
The Challenge
Melissa needs to feel that she is doing something exciting and important with her life, influencing politics and issues of the day. One of her most stimulating jobs was working as an assistant to an MP.
Her Strengths
Although she has felt unsure about what this career would be, I have coached her to see that working within a think-tank organisation would be perfect in using all her strengths and letting her feel she is operating at the centre of political life as well.
She is brilliant at research and writing and presenting information in a coherent, accessible manner. She has a track record of managing a team, has great resourcefulness and initiative, all of which would be invaluable in a research project.
Getting Clear
Melissa is an immensely bright and ambitious person who should never settle for a dull job but must follow her passion. She needs to run and fence less and focus on moving her career forwards.
She should approach all the major think-tanks and she should also take every opportunity to network and socialise with the type of people who can help her make this transition. Getting clear on what she's passionate about is the key to Melissa's Next Big Adventure.
Travelling around the world is thrilling but the real challenge is bringing some of that excitement into everyday life.
