Five Steps towards becoming your own boss

1. Be clear

Be clear about why you want to work for yourself and what you want from your business.  You need to know your own definition of success before you can be successful.  For example, how important are money, status, challenge, independence, flexibility, creativity or personal growth to you?

2. Be specific

Ask yourself: What do I want to achieve? When do I want to achieve it by? How will I know when I’ve achieved it?  If you have specific goals and deadlines, it’s much more likely that you’ll achieve them.

3. Know what you are going to do

Make sure you know what you are going to sell, who you are going to sell it to, why they will buy it and how you will reach them.  These are the key business questions to answer.

4. Know your strengths and weaknesses

You need to be aware of what you’re good at and where you’ll need some help.  Very few of us are fantastic all-rounders, so don’t be afraid to admit where you need some support.  Build up a network of people who believe in you and your business dream.

5. Go for it!

Finally, remember that, in the final analysis, it’s your life, your career, and your unfulfilled potential if you don’t follow your business dream.  So go for it – you owe it to yourself.
