What Makes a Brilliant Career?

A brilliant career is about more than the financial rewards and the status one achieves.

It's about

  • standing out at work and making a difference
  • coming home knowing you have achieved something and knowing you have respect in the workplace
  • having security at work and this comes from getting yourself noticed as a valuable asset in the organisation
  • developing yourself, adding new skills, continuously learning and growing as a person.

For me, a brilliant career is about knowing that I am progressing towards a goal and that the journey to that goal is enjoyable and fulfilling and the prize at the end is exciting.

We spend a vast amount of time at work and many of us just operate on a day-to-day mode, hoping that at the end of the year we will get a pay rise and at some point a promotion. Look around your workplace and there's probably one person who everybody thinks is great and is poised to do really well at work. Maybe they are tipped to reach the top. There was one such person where I worked and I wondered what made him different to me. I worked just as hard as him, I was just as intelligent and was just as good at my job yet he seemed to get all the recognition, the promotions and the interesting work that got him noticed and made him stand out.

What set us apart was that he was actively managing his career. He had taken his career by the scruff of the neck and was taking action and driving towards clear goals. I was letting my career manage me and I was passive I was waiting for things to happen. It's a good job I changed my attitude otherwise the career success I have achieved would have passed me by.

When you take hold of your career and do something about it your work life becomes far more enjoyable and interesting. You tend to get more opportunities and more challenges which means you have more variety all of which means your job isn't a dull repetitive slog to retirement. It is really important to me that I enjoy my job and career everyday must be fun and rewarding. How important is it for you? Managing your career is also about managing yourself and when you begin to make positive change in your life you can and will see massive benefits in your career. For example, I did a simple thing I got organised. It made a difference at work and also in my life in general.

Great careers don't just happen. They require planning, thought and action. To have a brilliant career isn't just about being really good or clever at your job. It's far more than that. Its about how you behave at work, who you talk to, how you carry yourself, the confidence you exude, the attitude and mindset you have towards yourself and your career. When you transform yourself in this way your career will just take off.

Today we are launching my online programme which will give you what you need to transform yourself and your career. Supplement it with a career coach to really kick-start your career and get the principles in place quickly, or work through the modules at your own pace. I thought I'd share my Top Five Tips for a Great Career put these into action immediately and you've begun the journey to an amazing career.
