5 Ways To Switch Your Thinking To "Healthy"
1. Your taste buds will change.
Remember this, if when you start eating healthily you initially miss fatty foods or the sweet taste of sugar. Keep at it and eventually you will find sweet and fatty food tastes disgusting – we all know of people who have given up sugar in drinks and then found that tea or coffee tastes vile to them with added sugar.
It will happen to you too, especially as you realise that with eating healthily you have more energy, clearer skin and sleep better. The benefits are enormous!
2. Allow yourself the occasional treat.
Whilst you need to change the way you think about food, don’t be purist about it – if you fancy the odd bit of chocolate or cake, then you can indulge yourself, so long as it’s in moderation and not too often!
Telling yourself that a particular favourite food is off limits for ever just sets you up for failure, as you subconsciously start thinking “Deprivation!” With time, your desire for such foods will weaken.
3. A healthy mental attitude is important as well.
It’s all part of the “respect your body” idea that I think is so important. Don’t punish your body (and ruin your social life) by opting for faddy mono-diets – their contents (eg eggs or grapefruit) are often healthy enough foods in moderation, but your body needs variety and enough energy giving foods to function well.
If you have the right mental attitude, whereby you want to look after yourself well, then you’ll find it easier to lose weight – and you’ll also not let minor lapses spoil your overall progress. You can acknowledge that they happened, and then get back on track.
4. Don’t confuse healthy food with weight loss food.
Some people feel virtuous when they buy low fat and diet products. Be careful with these – get adept at reading the labels on the back. Many of these products contain lots of additives and artificial sweeteners.
If you’re thinking health rather than weight loss, you won’t be buying them. By all means go for low fat – but check what may have been added instead of the fat!
5. Take exercise.
This is an important part of getting healthy and it will definitely help with a weight loss programme, keeping you firm and toned as you lose the weight, as well as revving up your metabolism.
Find something you enjoy, get together with a friend so there’s less chance of you ducking out at the last minute, and get that body moving!
