5 Step Belief M.O.T.

1. LIFT THE BONNET

Ask yourself what you believe? Chunk down, and ask what beliefs you hold about the world in general, your world, where you live, where you work, your friends, family, and yourself – including health, social, money, fun, love... (Add more as you feel are needed). PS: It’s very important you do this first step BEFORE moving on to the second.

2.  CHECK THE FUEL

Re-read you list and begin transferring each belief over to another, only this will have two columns; positive and negative. If you find some beliefs difficult to categorise, ask yourself not only what the belief brings you, but rather what it adds to the world around you.

3. CHARGE THE BATTERIES

Once you have the two lists, have a look back at the positive column and see if there’s anything you’d like to turn the volume up on. Should the ‘I’m a nice person’ become ‘I’m fabulous and a cool dude in every way’? Don’t be afraid to become graphic, silly, and imaginative and your own best advocate of how great you really are. This recharges the batteries, reaches the parts that a  sunshine holiday never could .

4. REV THE ENGINE

Now the negatives: one by one, ask if they are still relevant to your life. It’s so common to drag an old, out of date negative belief out of the context from which it came, such as childhood, teenage years, an argument ‘way back when’ – the list really can be endless. Just by recognizing the little blighters for what they are can be enough to disempower and ultimately consign them to where they belong; in the past!

5. STEP ON THE GAS!

Now, the real gremlins, the ones that just don’t want to leave. First is to realise just what they bring to your life; what they make you miss out on, how badly they screw things up. Close your eyes and get angry at what has been happening by holding this belief. Ask yourself what you would have to believe in order to disempower it. Imagine the new belief you would have to believe as having a warm, shimmering, golden light, and that light envelopes, bathes, and dissolves the old belief.

It’s important to do this exercise as many times as you need. Remember, an old belief has probably been there for years, it feels at home and really doesn’t want to move out – except you’re the one in charge, and you have just served notice. Repeating this exercise will make sure it goes completely, whilst also re-enforcing new, more positive beliefs.

Lastly, as with all coaching, our intention should always be that we are doing this for the right reasons; to elevate ourselves and our life – and that the process will be fun and empowering. Simply believe!
