Spot Your Talents / Part Two
It’s wonderful – it’s vital – to spot your talents. It’s fabulous to get busy expressing them. But – if you want to make extra money from your skills, which of your talents or skills is your Money-Spinner? What skill do you already have that can make you money straightaway? How would it feel if you generated an additional £300/ £500 per month? That’s the challenge I’ve thrown a few clients recently and a challenge I’m inviting you to take on. I’m not one to scrimp or make do. I’d rather come up with some money-making ideas and generate extra cash than have to cut back.
Let’s grab the challenge of making more money and grow bigger in the process. In my last blog, I encouraged you to spot your talents, to identify what skills you already possess, what you can do right now, or are already doing – perhaps, for free – that could bring in cash. Now, I want to encourage you to focus on which of those skills could make you money fast. What is your Money-Spinner? So here’s a few questions to spot your Money-Spinning idea:
What’s Your Money-Spinner?
1/ The fastest path to cash are ideas for which you already have everything you need. To get going right now, you need to be able to offer your service today. If you need equipment, try and borrow until you’ve made some money. If you feel you need to take a course, could you offer one service now and another, additional service, later?
2/ Don’t be precious about passion. Don’t get wound up worrying about your purpose in life. If your life requires you to step up and generate extra cash in our credit-crunch times, do it. It’s perfectly noble to make your life work and if clearing debts, saving your home, sending your kids to college are priorities, prioritise them.
3/ You need a lightbulb moment. If you’re not having a flash of inspiration, if you can’t see what people would be prepared to pay you for, find the smartest person you know and ask them. Better, book a Money-Spinner session with one of my team.
4/ How much cash do you want to make? I say, start small and build up. Work out how much per month, per week, per day you want to make. Figure out how many hours you’d have to work or products you’d have to sell. What price can you charge? Can you do it? If not, find another idea.
5/ What difference will £300/£500 extra cash make to your life? There’s your incentive!

Hi Fiona, you have really helped me with this newsletter. I am now pregnant and next year I will take a full year pregnancy leave. I was wondering about financially security and how I could make up the money I will lose while on maternity leave.. well the moment I read your article I had a lightbulb moment : i could teach my native language (Italian) to the locals (I now live in Germany where learning Italian is considered quite stylish!).. people have always told me that I am a good trainer ..and then who knows I will take it from there, maybe this could grow intoa proper business and even end up into being my full-time job..

Wow! What a journey I have been on over the past few weeks! So… I identified my skills, skills that people would pay for. Then I packaged up my skills into several little businesses. What I had overlooked was that I didn’t have to turn ALL of my skills into money-spinners! With a little prodding from Fiona, I realised that in fact, focusing on one idea that had potential to be the biggest money-spinner would actually be more beneficial for a successful business, for my work/life balance, and my sanity!
So didcottots.com and the other tots websites have become a hobby (I am planning not to be overwhelmed by work, but to also have time for a family life and even a hobby!)
And I am now focusing on providing business support services to small businesses – it’s still a work in progress, but please take a look – http://www.jnsbusinesssupport.co.uk.
A business based on using the skills and experience that I already have, no need for equipment or loans, and hours to fit in around my family.

Melissa, you are the Poster Girl for The Money-Spinner campaign! You tick all the money-spinning boxes:
* Offering a service using skills you already have.
* Getting going straightaway.
* Not waiting for a cash investment or further training.
* Making money while you make your life work.
This is the way for the UK to go. Jobs are being slashed, salaries are being frozen and this doom and gloom would be so awful if you didn’t know you could find your own way of making money or extra cash.
I can feel a workshop coming on!
I’m already raking in some cash with my bands doing more and more parties and weddings http://www.the-outlines.co.uk and http://www.skorchio.com for more details. But my idea to take forward is based on my juggling skills! no I’m not going to join a circus or anything but putting together workshops / team building sessions looking at goal setting, belief busting, raising awareness and learning to love mistakes (you have to make a lot of mistakes to learn how to juggle) amongst other skills. All demonstrated through learning how to juggle. Money to be made in the workshops themselves, sale of Juggling balls booklets CDs as well as charging for the workshops themselves. Already have run a prototype event and have two prospects in the pipeline. Even thinking of an online version too.
Going through a temporary hiatus at the mo as getting married at the weekend!! Right back on it after the honeymoon.

I’ve just started Get Better Coaching and am networking & connecting with lots of mums like me with little ones working part time. Some make their own products, some selling with franchises and some direct selling.
I came to coaching through a HR & recruitment background, and have been surprised how little people know ‘out there’ about coaching and the benefits.
As I’m not such a great sales & marketing person as I am a coach, I keep catching myself thinking how much easier it would be to be able to have a visible product to sell.
I started to recycle cards and make them into new ones years ago to give to friends. I’ve suddenly realised I DO have a product so sell that will take me into the environment where I can network and connect with people who will benefit from coaching for them for their businesses. I can sell my cards alongside these other mums at craft fairs and stalls at the weekends, and it will ‘fit’ with having a family, which is why they do this too!

A couple of weeks ago I posted on the forum about how I gad been working for the same company for over 25 years. I don’t like the direction the company is going in so was thinking of setting up on my own.
Well after speaking to a friend who I used to work with have decided to build up my own business before taking the plunge. I work as a tax consultant and am wanting to set up a tax return service which would undercut the bigger firms. Initially I wouldn’t have any set up costs and whilst I have other skills this is the one that I would be able to make money at straight away. Thanks for this blog it’s just the push I needed.
p.s. I bought your Falling in Love with Yourself a few years ago but I have got it out again and will start to listen to it again. I have also emailed you re the Ping Jewellwery.
