Why The Secret Doesn't (Always) Work
The Secret came out in 2006 and has been a global phenomenon, sitting on best-seller lists for much of that time. Its simple message that you can think yourself thin, happy, rich and everything else is seductive. And it appears to work for many. But for many others – it doesn’t. If the message in The Secret works, then it should work for everyone who follows it – shouldn’t it? But it doesn’t. There are entire websites devoted to Why The Secret Doesn’t Work and The Secret behind The Secret and heaps of disappointed folk who haven’t got the results they were hoping for. And now I’m about to add to the debate!
I got to thinking about why The Secret – and The Law of Attraction works for some but not for others as I was preparing the first session of the new Bounce Back! teleseminar. In the first session, Wipe The Slate Clean, I emphasise the need to clear up the past and ensure you feel entirely ‘clean’ and wholesome about yourself. In this way – and in only this way – you end up with a feeling of ‘deservedness’.
When you have a deep-down, genuine feeling of deservedness, you’re more likely to promote yourself, to get behind yourself and feel deserving of a wonderful life. Without this clean bill of self-worth, you’ll slow yourself down, possibly even sabotage yourself – and you certainly won’t be truly open to receiving all the goodies that The Secret is offering you.
The Law of Attraction works with your vibration, with your clarity and your willingness to receive. So, the million-dollar question is – how do you feel about you? How good do you think you are – how deserving? The rate at which you’ll attract what you want may well depend on it.
For a great step-by-step guide to working with the Law of Attraction, check out our new online course, launched today.
What do you think? Does this make sense to you?

As expected Fiona, you are spot on! The Secret contained wisdom that has always been with us, although it is only in this day and age that it has become so readily available. Perhaps it is because of this fact, that the message has been lost to some of those that read it. The book can seem just like a wish list (just wish for it and it will appear – arguably the DVD doesn’t discourage this approach).
The truth is that the message is both very simple and very deep. We may wish for success but if we don’t believe that we deserve it or deep down we don’t believe that we are a successful person it will always be out of reach.
The day that you can look at yourself in the mirror and say out loud “I am already a successful person and I deserve every drop of it!” is the day that it will all fall into place!

That’s exactly it, Charlie.
Very smart people intrinsically FEEL ‘I deserve every drop of success – and more’ get it. They easily attract more of the same and these are the folk we call ‘lucky’ – and they’ve probably never heard of The Secret or The Law of Attraction. Their lives are usually much easier than the average person’s with far less struggle and sweat.
We all know them, we may envy them – the trick is to emulate them.
Hi Fioina,
thanks for this thought-provoking article. It rang some bells, for sure!
I’ve struggled with feelings of low self-worth at times, and interestingly, its at the times where my confidence allows me to “let go” and get out of my own way, and just ask the universe to show me what the next step is, that I get some answers… and new clients too!
So being able to connect that to “deservedness” or self worth, is very useful – thanks!
Tracey
Hi Fiona
I have found what you say to be true, particularly since I have been diagnosed with parkinsons. Self esteem is important and thankfully doesn’t depend on good health.
Having experienced its fluctuations, I am convinced that knowing your self worth is an essential ingredient in making the most of life. I think it is when we slip back to old ways of thinking that we dont experience the best.
However moving from mental assent to believing in our self worth deep down is not always easy and I expect this is what many people find difficult. Personally I have found it to be a journey and we need to be committed to peruse it.
I certainly agree that it is worthwhile and makes all the difference to what we get out of life and also what we have to offer.People sense an inner calm and that attracts good things to us.
Best wishes
Karl
I have been very grateful for The Secret bring attention back to the Universal principles that we work with, however what was given was such a small fraction of what the Law of Attraction really is.
The principles are very sound, what we hold in our thoughts we create in our reality but as with anything you want to succeed in, you have to put the exercise in, which really wasn’t covered.
When you apply key strategies and techniques in your ‘exercise’ of attracting what you desire to you, then you cause these to be a vibrational match to the Universal laws and what you desire has to be attracted to you.
However people try to gloss it up, you can’t beat the Universe!

Thank-you Edel.
And she’s being very modest in not mentioning that she is the author of our brand new Law of Attraction course,
-discounted for the next few days!

‘Deservedness’ and Self-worth are inextricably linked.
Here’s the mantra my Bounce Back! teleseminar group are chanting this week,
I deserve the best, and I accept the best now.
xx Fiona
Hi to everyone reading this! I have had a long personal experience of exactly what Fiona is speaking of. I have spent 5 years – yes – 5 years – untangling all the baggage that got added into my lie – via the early life experiences of my youth. These hidden assumptions and beliefs about myself were stuff told to me by others – and for along time I believed they knew me better than I did. BOLLOCKS. Nobody knows you like you do. I created a self constructed wall to keep myself from what I really wanted, mainly because I did not believe myself worthy. Why else would crappy stuff happen to me?? Bad stuff can happen to anyone, anytime. Our fears are what keep us imprisoned. We resist and fight against – ourselves. And it is always to avoid feeling less than we know we are, or hurt, unloved. The short version here is that you have to get to know every part of yourself , the frightened, the angry, the lost, the ignored. Look in the mirror and accept that sometimes you were great, sometimes you were mean, and sometimes you were hurt. Honesty here, however difficult it is to see, is what will set you free. It has taken me just over 5 years to untangle all the layers I had – and this was often very challenging and confronting – always uncomfortable! But the life I have now is so very worth it – you would not believe how utterly fantastic it feels to be out from under all the weight of that baggage!! From my own experience I recommend Julia Cameron’s writing everyday whatever comes into your mind – DO NOT EDIT IT!!This alone has been the key to my being enabled to dismantle all the hidden barriers I held up within myself. The freedom I feel not having these present in my life is so worth the hard work I had to go through to get it!! Courage is doing what you are afraid to do – and that is exactly where you should start!!! NOW.
Well Done, Vicky.
Stay light!
Thank you Fiona
Yes I am truely excited to be able to bring this course to people.

It is such a step by step guide to defining who you are, understanding the energy within you and getting real good at creating everything you desire. Even if you know nothing about the Law of Attraction, you really will GET IT with this course.

I read this thread with interest. Whilst I’ve had some terrible things happen in my life (my sister dying at 21) I have also always had a feeling of being ‘lucky’
I often think to myself how lucky I am, and stop and appreciate my life, as I often think things could always be worse (eg children living on the streets in third world countries fending for themselves etc)
I remind friends to ‘trust in the universe and it will provide’ and do believe in the laws of attraction. Perhaps it’s not so much that you wish to attract wealth, but more a better quality of life. I believe much of that comes from within and if we only stopped and thought about being thankful for what we have, then subconsciously we open ourselves up to accepting what life has to offer.
I’m no expert these are just my own thoughts but I realised yesterday that it has become quite ingrained in me that I am lucky. Maybe there is some truth in the saying “I think, therefore I am!?”
Hello Fiona,
First, I’d like to say that I am a very big fan.I have three of your books, and find reading them simply inspiring. So I’m sorry that I’m going to have to disagree with you here – on just about any other issue, I’d be agreeing with you, and I don’t enjoy having to write this.
I hope that this comment will be taken as I mean it – a polite disagreement for us to reason about.
I certainly do believe that positive thinking has great results, and that this has been scientifically proven to be so. That’s great. Positive thinking makes us happier, and this improves our mental and physical performance. It may well make people live longer and improve their health, make them more personable and better people.
The Secret does work, in part – the part that has to do with positive thinking.
I won’t say “I don’t think that The Secret is for real.” It’s not up to me, I’m just a man in the street. What I will say is, there is no evidence, except for anecdotes, that The Secret works, and there should be.
If you focus your thinking on what you want, then it will make you more aware of it; it will probably help you to notice opportunities, and keep you on track working towards your goals.
But there is no evidence that your thoughts materially influence the real world without you taking action.
Fiona, you wrote something similar in The Ten Minute Life Coach – that there may well be people who can focus their thoughts and blip! make something appear for them out of thin air – but we’re not them, and the way we can make things happen faster is by rolling up our sleeves and getting stuck in to work.
Have your say!
