How’s Your Mojo?
Coaching is a demanding business. It demands that you embody the qualities others may want for themselves – optimism, self-confidence, positivity, joie de vivre. It demands that you live a life that’s on track, that’s working. It doesn’t have to be perfect – whatever that is, but you need to be walking the talk and looking like you follow your own talk. You need to be living an interesting life, with enough challenges to keep you growing and fresh, so there’s nothing stale or past its sell-by-date hanging around.
It’s quite a tall order! You have to keep yourself and your batteries continually charged. It’s why I took a large part of last year off, to focus on other goals and interests that had nothing to do with coaching. I felt I couldn’t best inspire others when I felt a tad jaded myself. The truth is, all this is true for whatever walk of life you’re in. The better you feel, the better you look to others and the more success you’ll have – the more others will say ‘Yes!’
Since we began The Coaching Hour (it’s fabulous – do join in, Thursday, 8-9) a few weeks ago, I’ve noticed two interesting themes:
1. Coaches and aspiring coaches who are are worn out, their spirit depleted, and who really need to be taking way better care of themselves and getting their lives into better shape. The energy and ‘vibe’ you’re projecting will encourage others to want some of what you have/appear to have and draw clients and opportunities to you – or not. The message is – pull back, put your own house in better order and lay a better foundation for you to stand on and face the world from.
2. People who are overwhelmed by the gap between where they are now and where they want to be. I’m all for Starting With The End In Mind. Thank you, Steven Covey! However, it’s vital to come back to where you are right now and start from there and build bridges to get, step by step, to the Higher Ground. Our brilliant motivation coach, Mike Blissett, talks on all of this in his course, Get Motivated.
Another course that you should also take a look at is Goal Setting, to help you define and reach your goals in a way that is do-able and doesn’t leave you feeling you’re miles from where you want to be.
You’ll also find more on this in Chapter 5 of The 7 Rules of Success, Inspire Others, where more than one of the individuals I interview point out that you’ve got to stay inspired and upbeat yourself to be able to . . . Inspire others.
How’s your mojo? How do you stay fresh? How do you keep your spirit undiminished, your spark undimmed? Please share!
