Does the law of attraction work?

Law of AttractionThe law of attraction states that you will attract into your life – whether wanted or unwanted – whatever you give your energy, focus and attention to.

This is the essence of the The Secret – the book and DVD sensation which recently popularised this idea. As a reader of motivational books, you’ll probably have come across this idea in other and earlier books. Dale Carnegie, Norman Vincent Peale and Napoleon Hill all talked about the power of positive thinking a generation earlier.

Is It Too Easy?

I find people often have problems with the simplicity or apparent simplicity of The Law of Attraction – you think about something and it’ll happen?

Additionally,  you can have significant ‘resistence’ to the idea of great things coming your way. If you harbour self-doubt and a lack of clear deservedness, you’ll slow down or sabotage altogether the success you want.

Remember, The law of attraction states that the universe responds to whatever you are offering – by giving you more of whatever you are vibrating. It doesn’t care whether it is good for you or not; it simply responds to your vibration.

Your ‘vibration’ is the result of your levels of optimism and self-belief and the challenge is to maintain a consistent, positive vibration in order to attract similarly positive results. Wishy-washy up-and-down feelings will bring wishy-washy results. The law of attraction – for it to work in your favour, requires consistency.

Truthfully, I find that difficult myself sometimes!

The Solution

One answer is to sidestep the notion of the law of attraction  altogether.

Substitute it with something that doesn’t require such a leap of faith and such a suspension of disbelief and self-doubt; something that feels more down-to-earth and doable.

This something is The law of Focus. It’s similar to the law of attraction but subtly different and in my experience, easier to work with.

You’ll undoubtedly have already experienced the law of focus in your life. If you’ve ever been pregnant, you may have noticed that many other women were similarly pregnant – it may have felt like your entire neighbourhood was pregnant!  Buy a new car and suddenly it’s everywhere – the roads are full of your Boxster, your Clio, your Smart Car. This is the law of focus operating – whatever you put your focus into increases.

Choose Your Focus

I want you to be utterly convinced that this phenomenon actually works.

Try it out by choosing to  focus on one thing – preferably something that you have no emotional connection or resistance to, something like a particular type of car or cake or coat or anything. Once you’re convinced, you can move on to listing ‘What I’d like to See More of in My Life is . . .

This can take ten minutes  and doesn’t set off the type of pressure and resistance that the law of attraction can.

Keep it light – stay playful, so you’re not triggering self-doubt and cynicism.  Staying light and playful raises that all-important vibration of yours!

Share your chosen focus and let’s all see this brilliant and easy law at work.

The Law of Attraction works. I am just beginning to put it into practice in my life and I am using if for personal issues.

It has worked for me in amazing ways so far – but what I do find is that:

You must work at eliminating negative words and concepts (read the book The Secret!)

You must “streamline your mind” in order to achieve a complete focus on the positive and what you want to happen.

For me I am very lucky because I already have the gift of Knowledge received from my teacher Prem Rawat who offers this amazing resource freely throughout the world for individuals to experience a truly peaceful experience in their lives.

I have had this gift for 30 years and I find that when feeling this marvellous sense of peace I can use the Law of Attraction (The Secret) and it works for me! (Positive indeed!)

I bought a book this week on The Law of Attraction, a simple easy to read book and not one that is ”philisophical”. What I like most was the suggestion to always prefix ”I am the proces of” and then add the thing you want to have. So while I am not fluent in German today I am certainly in the process of improving my German and becoming fluent in the language.
It does make a different. The real secret of success is to do a little but to do it often,

I agree with you Fiona that often the apparent simplicity of LOA can be a bit of a stumbling block. It seems to get people thinking that if it is that easy then why isn’t everyone doing it.

I think that the notion of ‘inviting’ the universe to help us achieve what we want to achieve in life is a concept that is slowly gaining more ground, and will continue to do so in the years to come.

I also agree with Myles ‘the secret of success is to do a little but do it often’. That way we keep our focus for a prolonged period on what we want to achieve. Nice post

I appreciate your new thoughts on an old theory, – ‘the challenge is to maintain a consistent, positive vibration’ especially. Changing your focus, so to speak, might be the answer to keeping up a sometimes difficult task to maintain!

I think you guys are great, so many people won’t open their minds to other ways and methods if only more people could see the benefits of adopting the law of attraction as a way to live their lives. If you know of any other sites like this please let me know.

The law of attraction really amazes me. I thought I could learn it easily but until now I’m still having problems finding success. They say the secret to success is understanding the law of attraction. Why is it that until now I’m having trouble finding success?

I am delighted you chose to speak about this. I have found the book the Secret fantastic for bringing a metaphysical understanding of life to so many people who were not previously open to these concepts. However, where it fell down was totally ignoring the ‘How to’ section. Merely thinking about what we want and knowing how the law of attraction works is not enough to manifest our desire, I spent years there myself.
What the Secret describes seems to be the 2nd or 3rd stage of the manifestation process. The first step, where the real work takes place, is about bringing our limiting beliefs/conditioning to the surface and consciously reshaping our belief system to our adult selves, so that we can actually ALLOW ourselves to have what we say we most desire. If we fail to undertake this phase, essentially we are neutralising a positive (external talk) with a negative (internal/subconscious talk) which manifests, yes, NIL, NADA, NOTHING. Only from uncovering our internal programming and consciously reworking it, is when real change can occur or at least how I have experienced true change.
The Secret and so many people, who obviously resonate with these concepts, seem to miss this altogether. It’s the old cliché of talking the talk, but the vibration doesn’t measure up, so no major results are achieved. I have learnt through experience, that the vibration is always the truth, talk truly is cheap, but so many fear doing the real work, they desperately want to believe their own talk to allow them to continue avoiding it.
What seems to be my learning theme of the past few months, is you can understand something logically, you can be a rational ‘expert’ on a subject, but that doesn’t mean you have even begun applying it to yourself. Look for the evidence in your life supporting your application, if the evidence stacks up you’re on your way, if it doesn’t, look deeper, that’s the red flag to show there’s much more in the subconscious to bring into the light before you can truly allow yourself have whatever it is you desire.
I have found positive affirmation subliminal CDs and NLP CDs, excellent in conjunction with coaching to help me bring my own and my clients limiting beliefs to the surface and re-structure my whole belief system and self-talk.

Suddenly, I’ve a idea, that’s you share more, and you will get more. Because law of attraction knows you love to share, so it will give you more.
Thanks for sharing, you all are so kind.

    Hi Fiona

Sure it works wonderfully well….and the speed at which things move along is often truly amazing. Very often I have to say to myself `get out of the way and just let it be’. Don’t try to figure it just go with what is your hearts desire – and don’t worry about the hows.

Incidentally this is my first visit to your Blog Fiona – it is aesthetically the most beautiful blog I have seen – I love the colours – and it’s so full of great sound sense. Marks out of 10? 14! Mind you I would expect nothing less.

I read a couple of books based on the law of attraction – while reading them, I think I was carried along with the writers’ enthusiasm, but on reflection afterwards it felt like an awesome responsibility – that everything that would come into my life would be a result of my own thinking or approach. All in all, it just made me more anxious and gave me an underlying message that if things were going wrong, it was probably my fault. Not very nice really.

    I went to a lecture by Wayne Dyer in 1998 and for some reason I always remember the last words he said;
“What you think you want, you get. What you think you don’t want, you get”
It’s only recently that I began to really get what he meant.
The idea that thought is creative goes back to the earliest religious texts. Funny how it seems that only now is the full meaning of the power of this concept beginning to seep into the public consciousness.

Have your say!
