Do you love your job?
If you feel your career is stuck in a rut, you are not alone. Two-thirds of workers in Britain are dissatisfied with their jobs and regret the career choices they have made.
In a You-Gov survey of 2,300 Britons, 57% said given the chance of rewriting history, they would choose a different job. Only 34% said they would make the same decisions.
I read about the survey in last week’s papers and am still in shock. What this means is that not only are a great many people unhappy with their job but even worse they’re resigned and apathetic about it as well. 57% of those polled said that ‘given the chance’, they would choose a different job.
This is the most incredible victim-speak I’ve ever heard.
Who or what do they think is going to give them their second chance? And why? Whatever happened to making your own way in life? Why are they waiting to be rescued, instead of figuring out their own escape plan? Heaven forbid, do they think life owes them something?
What this report doesn’t point out, but is frighteningly obvious is that there are a lot of unhappy, dissatisfied, disgruntled people out there who moan and complain, yet do nothing about changing their lot. They may have a fabulous love life, social life, or whatever, but work takes up a heck of a lot of our time, so it’s seems a good idea to ensure that work works for us. No amount of money can compensate for wasted years of unhappiness and resentment.
I’m minded of something the wonderful Oprah Winfrey said,
“I don’t think of myself as a poor deprived ghetto girl who made good. I think of myself as somebody who, from an early age, knew I was responsible for myself and I had to make good”
Now that woman really should run for President.
